Music theory, composition, and improvisation lessons in Arlington ma.

Music theory is an integral part of music making and as such should be incorporated into the students curriculum as soon as they begin instrumental practice. Think of reading musical notation as being synonymous with words, sentences and paragraphs.  One can think of this learning process as dry and dull or fun and engaging (like singing the tune some of us used when learning the alphabet). So we begin with the instruction of basic concepts that provide musical understanding simultaneously with the learning and practice of the chosen instrument – and as with learning a instrument, we make it a fun!

No matter what instrument you choose, you will receive the fundamentals of music theory.

We also offer advanced jazz music theory and classical music theory lessons, for those who are interested in diving deeper. These lessons are for high school students getting ready to go off to music conservatories, college students needed assistance with their music theory skills, or adults who have experience playing an instrument and reading music, but want to know more about music analysis and writing.

Aural Skills, as with theory, is an important aspect of musical training.  One’s use of the ear and voice to identify notes, chords and rhythm, at and away from the instrument, is what makes enjoyment of music a lifelong gift that the student will nurture for the rest of his or her life. Once again, this is an integral part of all lessons at Mindful Music Studio.

Composition begins when the student is ready, and that may be the moment a student enter’s our studio because that’s where they are feeling their creativity.  Not only will we not discourage this pursuit, but we will do our best to nurture and foster a open-minded attitude to all musical genres. Composition lessons are great for formed musicians, as well as those still working on their instrumental and vocal skills. Music theory is a big part of composing, and will be introduced on the need basis.

Improvisation is a wonderful way for a student to find joy and creativity while learning a new way of expressing themselves.  There may be an initial fear and anxiety connected with improvisation, which we will attempt to nullify by encouragement and participation with instructors as they learn the art of listening to themselves and others while performing on their respective instrument or singing. Improvisation is often related to jazz music, however, it is not limited to this style alone. You may expand your ability to improvise and add it to any style of music.

We offer lessons that are 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 60 minutes in length.
